Abstract

Air pollution is a gas (or a liquid or solid) released in a big enough quantity to harm the health of people or other animals, kill plants or stop them growing properly, damage or disrupt some other aspect of the environment, or cause some other kind of nuisance. According to the WHO, around 4.2 million people die prematurely from the effects of polluted, outdoor air pollution every single year, while a further 3.8 million die due to dirty indoor air. The regional air pollution in the Guanzhong Plain is characterized by high PM_2.5 mass concentrations in winter and high ozone level in summer, which is mainly caused by the huge quantity of pollutants emitted into the air. In addition, the terrain is similar to basin topography and valley terrain, being very detrimental to effective diffusion of air pollutants; and the annual average wind speed is low and the frequency of static winds (<1 m/s) is high, causing poor dispersion.

空气污染是指某些物质（例如：气体、固体或液滴）进入大气中，呈现出足够的浓度，并因此危害了人类、动物和植物的健康，造成环境恶化的现象。根据世界卫生组织数据显示，全球每年约有420万人由于室外空气污染而过早死亡，约380万人由于室内空气污染造成死亡。关中平原的区域空气污染呈现冬季PM_2.5高污染和夏季臭氧高污染的特征。大量的人为排放是主要原因，另外，关中平原类似盆地的地形和低的风速不利于污染物的扩散。

Speaker Bio

Yan Cheng, PhD, Professor/Doctoral supervisor. She is currently a Professor in the School of Human Settlements and Civil Engineering at the Xi’an Jiaotong University. Dr. Cheng is the member of Chinese Society of Particulogy’s committee on aerosol. She was awarded the Chinese Young Aerosol Scientist Award in 2015 and the Outstanding Instructor Award of Xi’an Jiaotong University in 2014. She was the deputy editor of a SCI Journal of Indoor and Built Environment. She graduated with a B.Sc. in Department of Geography from Hebei Normal University, received her M.S. in Environmental Science from Institute of Earth Environment, CAS, in 2002 and her Ph.D. in 2007 from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. She has over 20 years of experience in conducting air quality studies. Dr. Cheng has been principal investigator in several indoor and outdoor air quality research studies in Hong Kong and mainland China. These include 2 general projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). Dr. Cheng is the principal author or co-author of ~50 peer-reviewed publications.

程燕，博士，教授/博士生导师。西安交通大学人居环境与建筑工程学院教授；中国颗粒学会气溶胶专业委员会理事；2015年中国气溶胶青年科学家奖获得者；2014年西安交通大学优秀班主任奖；曾任SCI期刊Indoor and built Environment的助理编辑和名誉编辑。本科毕业于河北师范大学地理系；在中科院地球环境研究所获得硕士学位；在香港理工大学获得环境工程专业博士学位和博士后工作经历。从事空气质量研究二十年余年，承担和参与了多项相关课题研究，承担国家自然科学基金青年项目1项、面上项目1项。发表SCI论文50余篇。
