Lecture 10 Modular Data Centers: Towards Lego-Like Large-Scale Computers

Abstract

Data centers are warehouse-scale computers in the era of cloud computing and big data applications. Modular data center has shown great promise in providing scalable computing resources and it is deemed to be the key building block of the next-generation data center infrastructure. Modular data center can be installed either inside of a warehouse-scale data center or near the network edge. In this talk, we mainly introduce the concept and history of modular data centers. We will discuss the benefits and limitations of such design and the ways to efficiently manage them. Finally, we will envision the role of modular data center architecture in the next few years facing the “new infrastructure project” initiative.

数据中心是云计算和大数据应用时代下的仓库规模的计算机。模块化数据中心具有计算资源可扩展的突出优势,因此被看作下一代数据中心的基本组成单元。模块化数据中心能够部署于仓库规模数据中心内部,也能放置在网络边缘。在这个报告中,我们主要介绍模块化数据中心的概念和历史。我们进一步会简要讨论有关设计的优缺点,以及如何高效的管理和运行模块化数据中心。最后,我们会对模块化数据中心架构如何在未来“新基建”环境中发挥作用进行展望。

Speaker Bio

Chao Li received his BS degree from Zhejiang University and the PhD degree from the University of Florida. He is currently a Tenure-Track Associate Professor (PhD supervisor) with the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. His research interests include computer architecture, data center, and scalable parallel computing platforms. He has published more than 70 papers and co-authored four papers that won the Best/Highlight Paper Awards.

李超,上海交通大学计算机科学与工程系特别研究员,博士生导师。主要研究高性能可扩展的计算机体系结构。在包括TCTPDSCSURISCAHPCAMICROSCIPDPSICSDSN等国际高水平学报和会议上发文70余篇,并先后多次在IEEE HPCAIEEE CALIEEE ICCD等重要会议刊物上获得最佳论文/焦点论文奖。
