Lecture 6 How to Reduce Housing Net Energy Use to Zero
Abstract
In this lecture, I will discuss the various issues surrounding the net-zero energy usage of residential buildings. There is no one-size-fits-all solution to the problem, and each structure is unique with a different purpose. Therefore, an architect/engineer must understand all of the associated parts, including smart home devices, sensors, appliances, energy storage, building materials, HVAC, and weather patterns, to design the most optimal system. Initial cost and payback periods are also important factors for the owners from a financial viability perspective. Renewable energy such as solar and wind energy plays a significant role, but often it must be compensated by traditional energy sources. Education is also essential for the public embracement of these projects. Finally, I will discuss energy audits to determine the energy demand of existing buildings.
