Air pollution is a gas (or a liquid or solid) released in a big enough quantity to harm the health of people or other animals, kill plants or stop them growing properly, damage or disrupt some other aspect of the environment, or cause some other kind of nuisance. According to the WHO, around 4.2 million people die prematurely from the effects of polluted, outdoor air pollution every single year, while a further 3.8 million die due to dirty indoor air. The regional air pollution in the Guanzhong Plain is characterized by high PM2.5 mass concentrations in winter and high ozone level in summer, which is mainly caused by the huge quantity of pollutants emitted into the air. In addition, the terrain is similar to basin topography and valley terrain, being very detrimental to effective diffusion of air pollutants; and the annual average wind speed is low and the frequency of static winds (<1 m/s) is high, causing poor dispersion.
